RIJEKA
Rijeka (eng. River) is the largest and most important commercial port in Croatia. Rijeka is located on the Kvarner Gulf in the northern Adriatic and it is the third largest city in Croatia. It lies at the mouth of river Rjecina and has a very long history (the first time it was mentioned was in the 1st century). Most of its architecture is dominated by the buildings from the Austro-Hungarian Empire and it offers a mixture of Mediterranean and continental architecture which can be found in Budapest, Vienna or in Zagreb but on the other hand there are also numerous buildings and skyscrapers built after the WW II due to rapid industrial development.Rijeka is one of the most underestimated places to visit in Croatia which definitely should change as there are many locations worth seeing: Trsat castle (ideal for a walk, a coffee and sightseeing), the Korzo (heart of the city, a city promenade where everything happens), the Rijeka Carnival (annual event which represents the city’s trademark). Since the chances are greater that you will visit Rijeka during summer months, numerous great beaches are situated only a few kilometers from the centre. Two beaches (Ploce and Kostanj) were awarded by the Blue Flag which proves the cleanliness of Rijeka’s sea. Thanks to Rijeka’s strategic position numerous other destinations nearby are very easy to visit from here such as Opatija, Krk island, Ucka Mountain and the Gorski Kotar region.
